No the Wii is not capable of HDMI. Best try your luck on the next Nintendo system if you want better graphics. I don't care really, 480p is good enough for me.

There's no need for HDMI output on the Wii. Component handles the 480p widescreen output which is the best the Wii can do.

Kind of a shame not to have HDMI output. 780i and 780p are the new standards on HD TV and many homes that have Wii have the new HD TV's

Having HDMI doesn't magically give you 780i/p. HDMI is just a cable and it can carry all sorts of signals, including 480p. I should know: I send 480i and 480p over HDMI every day.
The Wii isn't high-def. Period. This is unrelated to it having or lacking HDMI natively. There are plenty of old threads which have beat that dead horse if you want to go searching and read them. The Wii could have high-def output without HDMI (component), or it could have HDMI without being high-def.
HDMI doesn't magically make things look better on its own... in fact, it's an overly-complex and troublesome cable spec. Read this:

HDMI is worthless for 480p. That is why Wii supports Component.
Your HDTV has Component inputs. Use them.

I wish the Wii did have an hdmi option. My TV’s are hooked up to an hdmi switching unit (inputs are cable boxes & PS3). Since the Wii does not have the hdmi option I had to wire around my system.
I am sure there are many people like me that have their TV’s mounted to the wall and are limited to the amount of cabling they can do. One hdmi cable solves that issue.

HDMI would be nice though just to have audio and video in one neat, cheap cable.

Actually 1080P is the new top "standard" in HDTV's. The only sources that can give you 1080P are BluRay, a PS3 or Xbox 360. HDTV is broadcast in 1080i or 720P. There really is no such thing as 720i, or at least no one uses it.
The Wii was built more for function, not power and can only do 480P, but it still looks great.
