What’s the skinny on the component cables? In the Wii menu there’s a place to change the output to ED/HD. I fix televisions for a living and for clearly understand the formats. I would think if the component cables are the bomb, Nintendo would include them in the base package. The standard hook up is composite video/audio. How does the Wii convert composite to Y Pr Pb? I searched the forum for all previous post on the subject (Wii HD Link Component Cable) and come back to the point if the cables make that big of a difference they would have come in the box. Or is it a scam?

They do make a difference in sharpness and color, and allows you to set your Wii to 480p. The reason they don't come standard in the box is that most people don't have TVs with component jacks yet.

Thanks for the reply Skippy. I used an old link to get to:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NU9VPW

So if I understand correctly If I hook these cables up I will get the option to switch it to ED/HD.

The Wii doesn't really have HD, it only changes the image from 480i to 480p, which is supposed to be clearer.

My TV doesn't support progressive scan but I bought component cables and it still made a difference in the colors.

I recommend getting a cheap third party pair instead of the expensive Nintendo ones.

EDIT: Wow, those ones are cheap.

Like I said I fix televisions and the rave is monster brand cables. It's like HDMI cables also. Most sets process Y Pr Pb and HDMI the same way/place. You'll hear the sales person tell you HDMI is a clearer picture. BS. Most people have their set top boxes less than 3' from the set. You can spend $80 on cables and get the same results from $3 cables. So the Wii does output both composite and component video. That's cool to know. Other wise it would get a picture. 480P should be a more clear and sharp picture.

That's correct. The 480p ED option becomes enabled when the component cables are connected.
