I absolutly love my Wii. Its a great entertainment system and I find that it is educational for my kids who are less than 5 and have not fully developed coordination yet. The Wii allows them to get some exposure to sports.
Now they want to play the "real" sport since they have played it on Wii.
Anyone know if Wii will have a second version with a Blu Ray AND a HDMI connection for 1080P resolution?
I have all my equipment updated to HD 1080P and connected with HDMI and the Wii is the only non HD device and it is a shame.
System:
Wii to HDTV via composite vid.
PS3
Xbox360
Cable DVT
Apple TV
All connect to HDTV via HDMI thru a HDMI switch.
I sure hope it doesn't get Blu-Ray...I prefer $50 games to the more expensive counterparts. Not that I can afford those anymore either, but still =P
Anyway, I know there's and HD setting somewhere, but I'm not sure what difference it makes...maybe you could shed some light on that for me?

The Wii can't output anymore that 480p, and that's with the optional component cables. The Wii only comes with composite cables, which will output only 480i. Neither are "true" HD. Currently the Sony PS3 and Microsoft XBox 360 are the only consoles with 720p/1080p/HDMI capabilities.

Technically, you could get a separate upconverter (or upscaler) to upgrade a standard video feed to 1080 (i for sure, there might be devices that do p - there aren't many "consumer" producers of these devices). Results may vary, but from 480p, it's barely noticeable. It usually smooths some edges. For more $ than the Wii is worth, too.
If you have a standard DVD player that does upconversion, it's exactly the same process, except that you have a line in, the chip that does the upconversion and a line out.
