Question about Friends online

How do you know if your friends are online playing a game? Is there a way to know or do you have to set up a time to get online with them with the same game? I'm hoping if I pop in a game, it'll just tell me if my friends in my friends list are online. Any info would be appreciated!

step 2. play online with your friends

I've got that and I know how it works. I want to know how Nintendo's works. I've got some friends in a friends list and I go online with GHIII and Mario Strikers, but I don't really understand how to find friends to play since I'm used to XBOX360's way of doing things. Any info would be appreciated!
