I don't get it. If this is going to be a subscription service like xbox live then why wont all games use it? Why will only certain red logo games use it?
I think that you are all barking up the wrong tree and this will be a game by game service, paying say $10 to play a game on a dedicated server for a year or a WOW type subscription game.
Will have to wait and see if i'm right and you are all wrong but it just dosen't make sense to me to have an xbox live style service that will only work with a few games.

$50 a month? By the end of the year you could've bought 2 Wiis with money left over.

50 dollars a year is the going rate for Xbox Live gold, so I'm guessing it will be around that price, maybe lower due to it not being as good as XL.

pay-to-play hits us this summer-fall of this year but has NOTHING to do with online gameplay itself. You people need to learn how to read, ha ha, seems like every post about paying for online is miss informed about pay-to-play service.
Pay to play will cover aspects of online such as DLC for games like Rockband/GH ect. ect. where you also have to pay to download new songs, that goes without saying on any console!
Nintendo is just introducing the red logo so all these newb gamers don't think they can hop online and download everythign for free. It will also include things such as extra levels, and other downloadables..
Also hinted was for voice chat to charge for that service, my bet is it would be a general channel download fee as with the internet channel, or a yearly fee for voice chat at most. Thats if we even get charged at all, DS voice is currently free so chances are Wii's could be aswell.
Pay-to-play is simply for the extra content not the acctual online, no mention of charging for online service at all has came from nintendo. My guess is they will slowly improve it because all online gamers seem to have the same complaints. Although it will still be very parental control oriented and user friendly so it will not be on the same level as Xbox live nor does Nintendo want that with all the casual owners with the console.

All you have to do is read the press releases from Nintendo to know whats going on with Nintendo.
Most the miss information comes from all the game sites that just interpret or predict what will happen or what they want to happen, instead of what will acctually happen. End's up pissing more people off than anything thinking they are getting something they don't want or they end up not getting something they thought they were gonna get...
We don't need to pay for online, we just need to current service to be improved by dropping some things like friends codes and adding other things like voice chat. They just have to toss in parental controls to make every happy in the end. The online service itself is just as good as any other, Sure brawl had some issues in launch week but it was cleared out quickly and the people still having problems is down to there own setup and not the online servers.
If anything you guys should start a petition of what everyone in general want's added and taken away from the service and send that to Nintendo with a few thousand signatures. If they know they can make more money by simple improvements, then they will do it no question. I'm gonna wait to check out Mario Kart's online see if they improved the setup as much as claimed, if so I will let them keep going without a complaint. Don't forget this is Nintnedo's first online supported console by them, they have to go through all the speed bumps that xbox did when it first launched its online.

Downloadable content onto a system with only 512MB of storage which many people have already filled (or are close).
That will be interesting.

Yes but they also released a new compression setup and we do not know what they intend to do with the other 4 gig 's of nand flash space on the console.
We also have no clue if they plan on adding a hard drive,SD support, or usb flash support when this happens... Like i said unless it comes from Nintendo themself you have no clue what is going to happen.

Except the big culprits (graphics and sound) are already compressed. How much further do you really think you can compress an MP3?

Actually, Nintendo has said they won't.

The Wii does not have 4GB of flash memory, it's only 512MB.

To be specific:
24MB of SDRAM embedded onto the graphics controller
64MB of separate GDDR3 SDRAM
3MB texture/frame buffer
512MB FLASH storage
and up to 8.5GB on the Wii disc
