Pay for your own broadband?
I don't know about the US but where I am what you're asking for help with is illegal.

It depends on the range of the router you will be using. Some have a longer range than others. My router is about 100ft. away from my Wii and I get a strong connection.
Good luck.

What he said it all depends.
My router is on the main floor of the house and im in the basement. Luck, I get a full connection. But that with me spend over 200 just for the router which most people wont do.

Like has been said before, the wifi range has nothing to do with the Wii. The AP is what determines range.
And to be clear, using a WLAN network, even if unlocked is illegal under Federal law (US). ANY unautherized use of a computer or network is illegal. Just because the signal is not locked down, does not imply permission to use the resource. Just like leaving your front door unlocked does not mean you give anyone permission to enter.
