Have You Checked Your Connection Speed?
I had the Wii about 3 months but just recently got the web browser. After reading some interesting information on a video game forum regarding connection speed I decided to check mine.
I used this test [speedtest.net] to check my connection. My computer has a download speed of about 12000kbps and 30 ping. My Wii only had 750kbps and 123 ping. I use the Wifi connection with a Belkin wireless router. This is a drastic loss of speed and it is noticeable web browsing.
The Wii speed was virtually identical to the two other posters. They both had very fast connections but ended up with only 750kbps download.
They suggested that maybe the Wii is limited to this speed. I was curious if it would make any difference if I used a wired connection. I recently got hooked on MoH:H2 online but I feel that I am lagging. People shooting me even though their gun isn't even pointed at me.
I would be interested to here what speeds other people are getting.

Well, considering that the Wii is essentially a 729MHz low-end computer with 64MB RAM, I can imagine it might have a hard time keeping up with the data rates that your modern PC can.

Data comes off of a game disc at far far greater speeds than can come over the internet and it has no problems keeping up with that data flow.

Yep but it gets processed differently. The Wii has dedicated silicon (GPU) for handling graphics. The device was designed as this being a core feature. The DVD controller's abilities has little to do with the network controller's abilities.
The internet connection is secondary and is extra "icing". It need only be fast enough to provide suitable online play. On top of that, who knows what sort of virtual machine the Opera browser is running under to provide the "Internet Channel", which may add additional latency to the whole process. The more software layers, the more complication and likewise the slower the performance.

Did you do these tests at the same time? or was there a gap between them?
Server load will effect the ping, as well as your incoming and outgoing packets. if your network is busy on the net, then of cause your wii's connection to the net will change.
But technically the difference between a computer and a wii connected to the same network shouldn't be much.
edit: i will try a lil experiment later on to see if i can notice anything.

I did the tests again (never both at once) at different times of day. There were some differences. My computer ranged from 10000kbps to 13000kbps. My Wii ranged from 750kbps to almost 1000kbps.
I went into my router settings and found out about 20 people were using my router. I set up a password so they should all be gone now. I did the tests again and no change(.
A lot of people including myself were hoping for a MMORPG but at these speed I think it would lag real bad.
If anyone has a "wired connection" I would be curious to know how fast your running.

Dude... 20 people were using your router?
Not only would that cause unnecessary strain on your network connection, but it would probably affect your lag like whoa. Let's hope your neighbor isn't some pimply-faced teenage hacker either.
Secure your network homey.

If you're only using WEP, you'll probably find 20 people using your router again in short order. In 2008 WEP is the equivalent of locking your door using masking tape. The idea of free internet gives people a lot of patience and incentive.
Make sure you're using WPA (preferably WPA2).

Just this past Sunday I was online for hours on a wireless access point where all they had done was hide the SSID and change its name. Like you, they incorrectly thought this was "security".
While using WEP might be the equivalent of locking your doors with duct tape, depending on hiding your SSID is like just hanging up a sign that says "please don't steal me" and leaving it otherwise unlocked.

If it's WEP, you'll discourage the lazy, that's all.
Any highschool kid can do a Google search and get everything he needs in seconds in order to easily crack your WEP password. Don't underestimate the lure of free highspeed wireless internet.

English is appreciated on these forums. Seriously, Jake... at least try to make an effort.
Thanks in advance.
