I just bought mariokart today and when i try to play it...it wont let me. the thing says that i need to perform an update. so i accept and then it tells me "update failed" so i go to my internet connection options and perform an update from there. and it did it. and then i went back to try and play my game and it did the same thing. i checked my mail and it said something about updating the wii. so i clicked "update" and it said that there were no new updates....what is going ON??!?!

Odd. This is probably just the standard update that seems to be coming with most games lately. It should perform the update from the disc and not over the internet at all. Try unplugging your Wii from the wall for about 30 seconds and then plug it in and put the game in for another try.

Do you have any channels free on your wii menu? It needs at least one open slot.

Is the game disc for the same region as your Wii?

Return it and buy a version of Mario Kart designed to run on your console.

Please read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_lockout
To answer your question: not without someone with considerable technical skill taking apart your Wii, voiding the warranty, doing some unsupported soldering and modifications to it which have a high-probability of destroying your Wii if he doesn't get it perfect, and could still kill your Wii later if Nintendo ever puts code in a game to detect it.
Such "modifications" are not advocated or supported on this forum, and strongly discouraged. Discussions about details of them are closed and users often banned, since their primary use is for illegal purposes.
Your son made a purchase mistake, and there's no free way out. The game might as well be for the Playstation. You need to suck up your losses and just buy the correct game. You could probably sell the US one on eBay for a bit and get some money back, but you're still going to lose some money in the process regardless.
