Hey all, I'm new to the Wii, and I'm trying to get some answers on how to jump online with it. I'm looking for the simplest way possible, and have no interest in going wireless. I don't have a hub, but my cable modem does have a USB output (apparently for computers without Ethernet).
I was wondering if I can run a USB cable direct from the modem to the Wii? This would save me having to buy the LAN adapter (and a hub), which is just gonna end up going to USB anyways. Or, is there something proprietary in these LAN adapters? If it comes down to the point where I have to shell out $20 for one, not the end of the world, but I would like to avoid having to reconfigure my computer.
Thanks in advance!

No, in your situation you'd need the LAN adapter and then connect the ethernet from the modem to the LAN adapter. You can't go direct USB connection from modem to Wii. Or you could get a wireless router.

Ok, I got the LAN adapter, a router, and good cables (tested). I'm still getting connection errors, varying from 52020, 52120, and 51420. I've manually entered all the information (IP, Subnet, & Router) but don't have DNS information in my TCP/IP Setting on my computer (I'm using a Macintosh), so I left that on auto. I did a search for some of the errors here and the only advice I could find was to turn it off for an hour and try again. Tried it, no luck.
Is there any other advice anyone can offer before I call up Nintendo?
**Edit: I should add the router is working fine with my computer, I tested it going direct from the modem (no luck), and the activity lights seem to show activity from both lines.**

ive heard nothing but trouble about the lan adapter and other nintendo connection perephirals (usb wifi adapter)
your best bet is swapping your router out for one that supports transmitting over wireless (usually has an antena of sorts). theyre rather inexpensive for a decent one.
if you dont want to use wireless because your wii is too far from the router than good luck getting the wired solution setup. unforunately i have no advice on that topic. but the wireless is extremely easy to use and it doesnt lag a bit. (my wii is like 2 feet from my router though )

All of the error codes seem to be associated with an issue with the firewall on your router. I don't have any idea how you woud go about changing it, but maybe try accessing your router settings and switching the firewall off to see if that stops you getting error codes. If it does then you have, at least, narrowed your field of enquiry and hopefully wil be more likely to find a solution.

Yeah I tried accessing the router settings, there's no active firewall. I called Nintendo and they were no help (turn power off and wait a minute?) but they said all my equipment should be good. I was really trying to avoid the wireless connection, especially since I've already wired the patch panel and have no other wireless equipment.
This isn't my first experience with networking, and I assumed it would be pretty simple. Everything looks like it should be working ok, even judging by the activity lights on the router and adapter, they seem to be communicating. I guess alls I can do is wait until the Nintendo Specialist returns my call...until then, I'll practice with the Smash Bros. =)
