Am I going to have to keep my firewall and anti-virus turned off while being online with the wii? or will it stay connected. I have run the connection test and it comes back ok either way I have it, but when I go to connect to the shop channel it won't connect. Any ideas would be appriciated.

As long as you're taking the normal route and using a router, and you're not using the (discontinued and unsupported) wifi adapter, what's going on with your computer has no bearing on whether your Wii getting online. Your PC could be off.

My Nintendo Wifi Connector works perfectly, as long as I have 'gateway mode' enabled on my firewall (Sunbelt). Unfortunately that feature is disabled on the free version, so ever since my license expired in April I just haven't been online with my DS.

The USB wifi adapter was a bad idea and Nintendo eventually figured it out. You have drivers and complicated setup to deal with, and even when it works perfectly, it's dependent on the computer being turned-on and always in working order. Anything goes flakey with the computer, and there goes your Wii's online connection. Why do you think there have been so many threads on Wiichat from people with issues with the wifi adapter, compared to any other issue?

What is your time worth? Seriously, people. You can get wireless routers for under $30. Anyone getting the USB wifi adapter isn't really thinking straight.
