Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Published by JKill09
04-07-2008
  • Story
    • "After the defeat of Mad King Ashnard three years ago, the country of Daein is now falling to pieces, as a corrupt government strives to keep control over a public body that is now thrown into chaos. As an odd move for Radiant Dawn, players are actually assuming the role of members of Daein, previously the enemy in Path of Radiance. Taking control of a group called the Dawn Brigade - a medieval Rebel Alliance, if you will - players will scour the countryside in search for allies, aiming to take down the corrupt leadership that has - and continues - to plague Daein."
    • Though the story continues from the previous game, Path of Radiance (GC), newcomers will not be lost in this game. This game introduces the characters and the story as if you all players were new. The only thing you may miss out on is the joy of seeing you favorite Path of Radiance character grown up in this game. That's little however and shouldn't make you pass on this game. The game provides background information by storytelling and including flashbacks to keep the player up to date. Basically do not worry about picking up this game and being lost because you'll be fine.
      Coverart:
  • Gameplay
    • The gameplay hasn't changed at all, but why would it? The turn-based attack system has been successful. Players will be given a choice of characters to fight with. When the map appears it's a matter of moving and attacking either directly or indirectly.

      Movement:

      Combat:

    • Each fight will gain the characters experience and they will change classes once they reach level 21 (There are three classes for each type of character, last game there were only two). Between each of these battles you will be directed to a base (when you get far enough in the game). At this base you can purchase items and weapons, learn interesting info that will aid you in upcoming levels, save your game, or level up your characters manually.
      Level Up:
    • There are A LOT of characters in the game so there is replay value. You may want to use your favorite ones/the ones you like the most the first playthrough, then go back and use some other characters during the second playthrough. There's unlimited combinations for your team so choose whichever characters you want to use and get them experience. However just know that once a character dies they're gone forever and won't fight again. Be cautious.
      Many Characters:

  • Controls
    • Controls are VERY simple. You only need to press a few buttons to make your characters attack. This is intended because the game is so strategic that you will be too busy thinking about your next move that you won't have time to think about a button combo. The simple button combo works perfect in this game. Also, you can use a Gamecube controller if you please.
  • Support
    • Not only does this game provide you with nostalgia in the form of favorite characters being included in the game, it also allows you to use your save data to receive bonuses. All you have to do is insert your memory card into the Wii and any character that you leveled up to the maximum in Path of Radiance will receive a nice boost in Radiant Dawn.
  • Advancements
    • Last but not least I wanted to shed some light on the advancements. The skits for one are beautiful this time around. Last game the English version of Fire Emblem was bashed for having bad voice-overs and bad skits all-around. This time the skits are very well done. The voices match the characters perfectly and the graphics and movement go together wonderfully. This is a great advancement.
      Skit Screenshot:
    • The songs and sounds are also advanced. Though they have the same basic tracks as Path of Radiance, there are different sounds added in the give the tracks more of an impact. This is noticeable in the battles where the 'Attack' music sounds great.
Rating (out of 10) Description

Presentation
Battle animations are improved. The menu's aren't elegant in anyway. They are simple and that may be a negative to some but menu's mean nothing when looking at the overall game. The screens and menu's you can access are easy to navigate making the simple presentation work well.
6
Graphics
The graphics overall don't surpass the Gamecube ones by much.
9
Sounds
As I said the voice-overs in the skits work very well with the action. This game also boasts a nice original soundtrack which sounds great.
10
Gameplay
Gameplay is and will always be strategic. If you don't want to think then you will not enjoy the gameplay, however if you enjoy strategy (which I do) the gameplay is godly.
7
Lasting Appeal
After you complete it, you may not want to play it over and over again. However, you must complete the game before this option becomes available, and the game is epic. This game will take you a WHILE to complete, so it does 'last' very long. However it does not have a multiplayer mode for when you complete the story mode. But as I said you may want to go back and use different characters so there is a sense of lasting appeal. Plus, the difficulty levels differ greatly. The harder levels provide more enemies so you may go back and challenge yourself when you complete it. There are story twists in which you select an option. You may want to go back and pick the other side just to see what happens.
40 / 50
Overall
This game is great. If you want a graphic heavy game this game will NOT be right for you. This game relies solely on its addictive gameplay and doesn't really concern itself with providing 'great' graphics. Overall this game is a very great game for previous fans and new fans alike. Hopefully you purchase this game (for your benefit).
