No matter how amny 1-UPs I have when I save and quit the game, I always end up with just 4 when I restart it?
Like, for example, last night, I ended the game with exactly 25 1-UPs and quit and saved my progress but when I started it up this afternoon, it's back to 4 1-Ups.
That's the way all Super Mario platformers are. There's nothing wrong with your game.
A good way to get more lives is to talk to the toad with a message from peach, he'll give you some.

thers no way around that, every time u quit even if u save the amount of lives u had goes back to 4

Yeah, you can't save the number of lives you have. This pissed me off something awful when I first discovered it. Don't worry about it man, if you want more lives, here is what you do: Run and spin the crate in the garage, collect the life and run into the conservatory, then run back out. Go and repeat the process. It works, and you can get all the way up to 99 lives this way.

Right. And depending on how far you are in the game, you can get, 1. 5 lives from toad who brings a letter from peach 2. Spinning into/jumping on top of the crate 3. mushroom under the dining room(?), don't remember which room, but it's there 3. You can get three more if you have gotten far enogh where you can spin jump to fly (red stars). Bottom line, you can build those lives up preetty quickly in various ways (including getting 50 star bits).
