Here is some information on how to unlock most things in the game,
(*SPOILERS*)
Characters: Do any of the techniques, then battle the character in a brawl
• Ness
-Reflect 10 projectiles
- Play 5 matches in VS Mode
- Get Ness to join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Marth
- Beat Classic Mode on any difficulty with any character
- Play 10 matches in VS Mode
- Have Marth join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Luigi
- Beat Classic Mode with no continues
-Play 22 matches in VS Mode
-Have Luigi join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Falco
- Complete the 100 Man Brawl with any character
- Play 50 matches in VS Mode
- Have Falco join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Captain Falcon
- Beat Classic Mode in 12 minutes or less
- Play 70 matches in VS Mode
- Have Captain Falcon join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Lucario
- Complete all 5 Target Tests for one character
- Play 100 matches in VS Mode
- Have Lucario join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Snake
- Play 15 matches in VS Mode on Shadow Moses Island
- Play 130 matches in VS Mode
- Have Snake join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• R.O.B
- Play 160 matches in VS Mode
- Have R.O.B. join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Ganonforf
- Beat Classic Mode on Hard with Link or Zelda
- Play 200 matches in VS Mode
- Have Ganondorf join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Mr. Game and Watch
- Beat Classic Mode with every character
- Play 250 matches in VS Mode
- Have Mr. Game & Watch join your party in the Subspace Emissary
• Sonic
- Complete Classic Mode with 10 characters
- Play 300 matches in VS Mode
- Complete the Subspace Emissary
• Jigglypuff
- Complete Event Match #20
- Play 350 matches in VS Mode
- After you beat the Subspace Emissary, find a secret door
• Toon Link
- Beat Classic Mode with Link
- Play 400 matches in VS Mode
- Visit the Forest Area after you beat the Subspace Emissary
• Wolf
- Complete Boss Rush Mode with Fox
- Play 450 matches in VS Mode
- After you beat the Subspace Emissary, find a secret door

• Electroplankton- Complete Event #28, The Flower That Blooms on the Note
• Big Blue- Play as Capt. Falcon in 10 brawls.
• Green Greens- Play as Kirby in 20 brawls
• Jungle Japes- Play on Melee stages in 10 brawls
• Pokemon Stadium 1- Play on Pokemon Stadium 2 in 10 brawls
CDs: These are the ones you unlock with out finding. In order to unlock the others, you must find them randomly.
• Dream Chaser Song: F-Zero- Unlocked by playing 10 brawls on Port Town Aero Dive.
• Goruda: Kirby- Unlocked by playing 10 brawls on Battleship Halberd.
• Power Hungry Fool: Fire Emblem- Unlocked by playing 10 brawls on Castle Siege.
• His World Instrumental: Sonic- Unlocked by playing 10 brawls on Green Hill Zone.
• Metroid Ending: Metroid- Unlocked by playing 10 brawls on Frigate Orpheon.
• Super Mario Bros. Underwater Theme: Mario- Unlocked by playing 10 brawls on Mushroomy Kingdom.
• Snake Eater Instrumental: Metal Gear- Unlocked by playing 15 brawls on Shadow Moses Island.
• Route 1 Viridian City: Pokemon- Unlocked by completing Event #8, Go! Trinity!
• Legendary Air Ride: Kirby- Unlocked by completing Event #13, Dragoon Rush
• King Dedede's Theme: Kirby- Unlocked by completing Event #15, Dedededede Hammer
• Dark Mountain and Forest: Zelda- Unlocked by completing Event #18, Dark Link Duel
• Fire Field: F-Zero- Unlocked by completing Event #24, Come On! Blue Falcon!
• Great Temple (Melee): Zelda- Unlocked by completing Event #33, The Evil King's Descent
• Ocarina of Time Waltz: Zelda- Unlocked by completing Event #37, The Flying Pirate Ship
• Star Wolf Theme (Assault): Star Fox- Unlocked by completing Event #38,Wolf on a Fox-hunt, on Hard
• Princess Peach's Theme: Mario- Unlocked by unlocking all Melee stages.
• Menu 2: Smash Bros.- Unlocked by getting all 35 playable characters.
• Ike's Theme: Fire Emblem- Unlocked by getting Ike in the Subspace Emissary.
• Mach Rider (Melee): F-Zero- Unlocked by defeating 50 or more Alloys in Endless Multi-man Brawl.
• Multi-Man Melee Theme: Smash Bros.- Unlocked by clearing 100 Multi-man Brawl in 4 min or less.
• Bob-omb Battlefield: Mario- Unlocked by playing VS Mode for 50 hours.
• Pokemon Center: Pokemon- Unlocked by collecting a total of 200 stickers.
• Zero Two: Kirby- Unlocked by getting over 5000 total coins in Coin Mode.
• 3D Hot Rally: NES- Unlocked by clearing Target Test Level 5 with any character.
• Excite Bike: NES- Unlocked by clearing Target Test Level 2 in 19 sec or less.
• Tal Tal Heights: Zelda- Unlocked by clearing All-Star Mode on Easy.
• Staff Credits: Smash Bros- Unlocked by clearing Classic Mode on Hard.
Game Modes + Features:
• All Star Mode- Unlock all characters.
• Boss Battle Mode- Unlock by completing the Subspace Emissarry.
• Online Friend Icons- Unlock all 35 characters.
• Target Smash Medium- Complete Classic Mode twice on Easy or once on Medium.
• Target Smash Hard- Complete Classic Mode twice on Medium or once on Hard.
• Target Smash Very Hard- Complete Classic Mode twice on Hard or once on Very Hard.
• Target Smash Intense- Complete Classic Mode twice on Very Hard or once on Intense.
• Stage Parts A- Play on a created stage 10 times or more.
• Stage Parts B- Build 5 custom stages.
• Stage Parts C- Build 15 custom stages.
• Donkey Kong- Play for 10 hours or more total.
• Super Mario World- Play on Yoshi's Island (Melee) 3 times.
• Super Mario Bros. 2- Play as Peach and win 5 matches in VS Mode.
• The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time- Play as Toon Link 10 times in VS Mode.
• F-Zero- Beat Boss Battle Mode with Captain Falcon.
I'm not going to go crazy and use guides to help me unlock all the characters as fast as I can, it took me almost 4 months to unlock all the characters in Melee when I was younger, I want to do it the old fashion way, I'm not going to lie though, I did look at this, not like I'm going to remember, 7 days, 3 hours, 42 minutes until Brawl everyone.

If you want it to be challenging just do it on VH mode kekek : )
I actually tried VH classic w/ Ice Climbers (on melee) w/ one stock and didn't get pass the second stage.. sad : (
Well someone on this forum has already played the game (goes by the name of marioman) and he says the subspace emissary was fairly challenging at certain points, and he was playing on normal difficulty, so it might not be as easy as it sounds.
