customizable controls

anybody else having issues like this .... I actually prefer to use the wiimote and nunchuck for SSBB (minority, I know) except for a few minor button issues. So I go into edit the controls (i.e. turn off "tap-up" jump, turn on "shake" for smash attacks, change Z to jump etc.), test it out using the + button, everything works great. Save it to my profile, and then the controls are no different (back to default controls) when I try to play either online, 1 player, hell even in training .... WHAT IT THIS EFFING POINT OF HAVING CUSTOMIZABLE CONTROLS IF YOU CAN'T USE THEM. I don't know, am I missing something obvious here???

You choose your profile at the character selection screen. The little block with the pencil next to it. They make manuals for a reason.
