add wiimote to wii playground multiplayer

We have Wii playground but cannot figure out how to add a 2nd wiimote to use the multiplayer mode. We get to the point where it says add another wiimote to play with 2, 3, or 4 players, but nothing we do adds the 2nd wiimote. In Wii Sports it does it easily by pressing 1 and 2 together. What do you do?

1st, take off the battery cover on the wiimote. thers a button there called sync. prees it. then, on the wii console, open the flap that has the sd card slot. theres a red button that says sync. press it. that should work.
