Can you play GameCube games with the Classic Controller?

Can you play GameCube games with the Wii Classic Controller or do you have to use a GameCube controller? I'm hoping I don't have to buy both... three controller's for one system is a little much. Thanks!

you can't, you need gamecube controllers, because the Classic one would be connected to the Wiimote therefore, the Wiimote doesn't work with GC games
