Siliconera reports that Square Enix has just announced that it will be releasing a Wii version of classic RPG, Chrono Trigger on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan this April. Originally released in 1995 on Super NES, the game shipped more than 2.5 million copies, and was credited with revolutionising the world of RPGs with never-before-seen features, such as multiple endings determined by side-quests and the player’s actions.

Square Enix previously released a Nintendo DS version of the game back in 2008, with a brand new dungeon and a Wireless Play mode. The Wii Virtual Console version will be a pure and unadorned port of the SNES game (complete with original artwork by famed manga artist Akira Toriyama), however, without any of the DS version’s added extras, and will be available for download in Japan (and hopefully soon after in the rest of the world) for 900 Wii Points. There are no screenshots available yet of the Virtual Console version, so in the meantime take a stroll down memory lane (or should that be memory dungeon?) with these shots from the 2008 DS release (sorry, they’re a bit small!).
