Classic Controller Question

Can i use the classic controller in place of a gamecube controller?

also can i save gamecube files on my sd card of do i need a gamecube memcard?

I tried using the Classic controller to play Super Smash Bros. Melee but didn't work since the Wii controller automatically turns off when you play gamecube games, so you can't use it and also you can't go to home, you need to turn the Wii off to change games
