Console games - no software patches needed?

Can anyone explain why console games, although having (sometimes more than) the odd glitch, are generally good to go as soon as you get them? Whereas PC games often have patches coming out for them for months even years afterwards. Granted It may be the case that consoles until recently were unable to have patches applied to games, but it always seemed that the pc games were often released a bit ropey, then patched to work well, wheras console games are released and run fine...?
 
Games consoles didn't have the luxury of Internet until recently

The developers tend to just realese a newer version of the game instead
 
Actually they can by just as buggy as PC releases. The only difference is that until now they just able to distribute patches for console games because of the lack of internet connection.
