A Chinese couple tried to name their baby "@," claiming the character used in e-mail addresses echoed their love for the child, an official trying to whip the national language into line said on Thursday.

The unusual name stands out especially in Chinese, which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke characters to represent words.

"The whole world uses it to write e-mail, and translated into Chinese it means 'love him'," the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the State Language Commission Li Yuming.

I also read another one the other day, a family wanted to name their kid 'Superman'

And another one was '4Real', but there's certain laws in some counties forbidding parents to use certain things like numbers and that.

"@" in Chinese means love him?? does it? how come i've never came accross that?! Am sure when chinese people say "@" its a very poor english american accent of "ata" lol with the 2nd a not as loud.

But why would you want to label your child with a symbol??? lol

i remember a few years ago in england someone tried to name a child It, but because of some laws against children it wasn't allowed.
