Does Sony really lose money on every PS3 Sold? I know Microsoft does, but if this is the case then Nintendo wins the console war because of all the money they make, the consoles only cost about $170 Canadian to make... I saw it somewhere on these forums, so if Microsoft and Sony are losing money on every console sold, and Nintendo is making about $150 on every console sold then isnt it hands down Nintendo wins this generation of console wars?

Something like that. And yes Sony does lose on every console sold, good thing theres so much money behind it really. The PS3 is a good system, no doubting that, that is why it costs so much to sell and make.

not exactly... see a blue ray player goes for about 900 cdn (im canadien) the ps3 goes for 700 cdn :s, they lose that much, so they rely a lot on their games to sell. thats why its bad to mod your system... they lose hellamoney, well at least theyllbe no ps3. oh and theyre also losing money cuz ps3 are selling pretty bad.

I'm Canadian to, but I CAN SPELL CANADIAN RIGHT! Anyways, sony is screwed. The PS3 is a black hole for money, and the fact that many people didn't even buy games with the PS3 doesn't help much. :mad2:

Taking into account the R&D work, distribution and components of the PS3, yes, it is sold at a loss. The idea is to get it into your home and then make money from game sales, third-party licensing and brand name recognition. This means Sony is hoping they'll sell you their gaming device and you'll be a Sony HDTV to hook it up to.

The PS3 is also Sony's way of increasing the exposure of Blu-ray. Blu-ray is Sony's newest baby, just like Beta Max, MiniDiscs and Memory Sticks. Sony has a really bad track record for winning format wars so it's too bad they are forcing the consumer into a Blu-ray purchase. If they took that out, the console would be cheaper and I think that's where a large number of people are upset with the PS3. It's too obvious that Blu-ray is included in the PS3 simply to get it out there.

Blu-ray is technically superior to HDDVD but only because of capacity but already I've read articles about larger capacity HDDVD discs becoming available. Playback quality of Blu-ray and HDDVD depends more on the player and its internals than the media. Still though, Blu-ray might hold an advantage due to advertising. These new DVD players are capable of more data on a disc because of the blue laser diode being used but HDDVD also uses a blue laser. But since Blu-ray says blue in the name, I think many consumers will assume it's the only one of the two with the fancy new blue laser.

Nintendo does not make $150 on every console. They make about $40 profit on every console. Sony loses a nice chunk on every console but they make profit from the PS2 (which still sells by the millions) and from licensing, etc. The same goes for Microsoft. They may lose on the console but they make up for the Live subscriptions and licensing.

Actually they have designed blu ray disks at 250gb. The ps3 can currently read 2 layers, but with a firmware update can read even more. There was a blu ray disk that can support 50gb per layer, rather than the current 25gb per layer that everyone is using now. Blu ray still hasnt reached its potential.

they loose money on the console but make up for it on the fact that 1/3 homes in america has a video game system ane hopefully its a wii, that they buy games and accessories for. nintendo is suppost to be making like 40 bucks tho, or at least the store that sells it is. sony and micosoft r loosing more then their making just to try and sell their products though. but they have money in the bank.

we all know a cd doesnt cost 50 bucks~
(burger king made 5 xbox360 games and sold them for 4.99)

wow, time for a banning, the only words in your vocab are gay, fag, and faggot. Those are some pretty sentient bundles of sticks then.

I'm not sure but I heard that the porn industry is using hddvd. They always decide the format wars, seriously. Could be blu-ray. Again, i'm not sure.

I was thinking the same thing

Edit: okay post that i was talking about was deleted soooo...... gotta think of something to say.

losing money per console is not as bad as you think. You even mentioned it that the xbox is losing money, yet leading the war so far (yes I know it was released early).

Edit: ha ha, the mod is going around deletin' posts in here, surprised that the porn one stayed in.... Anyone have any proof to the rumor I heard?

its more like software that they make up the money, thats what the whole plan is, loose money on hardware, make money on software
and wow, i thought no mod would ever come to the ps3 section

Yeah, i don't even think that your post was that bad, he was pretty n00bish. It also made me look like I double posted:sad:

Edit: Oh, my 300th post w00t

Sony'll do fine (I hope)

I don't like their systems that much (there are only a few amazing games for them, such as God of War =]]). I was planning on buying a PS3 in a few years - maybe when/if a PS4 comes out. I just got my PS2 when the PS3 came out.
