The rumours have been going around for several weeks now that the legendary N64 game GoldenEye will be returning to the Wii. Well now it’s been confirmed by Activision at E3 in Los Angeles that GoldenEye 007 will be released during the 2010 holiday period exclusively for the Wii.

This new version of the classic game channels Daniel Craig’s lethal and gritty James Bond in a modern take on the N64 version. Combining fast-paced FPS action with covert gameplay, GoldenEye 007 offers varied ways to complete each mission, destructible environments, the use of cover, and multiple control scheme options. In terms of the multiplayer experience, fans can look forward to split-screen action featuring classic Bond characters and special game modes, as well as online play for up to eight people, with unique modes and an XP system for unlockables and achievements.

Players will have several control scheme options to choose from, and the game will be compatible with the Classic Controller Pro for gamers who want the nostalgic experience of playing with standard FPS controls, as well as the Wii Zapper for* “point and shoot” gamers.

Reviving a true, genre-redefining classic for a new generation is not an easy thing to do, but we’ll be waiting with baited breath to see if GoldenEye 007 can possibly live up to the original. The first batch of screenshots is looking very promising indeed though!
