does anyone have a clue as to if/when nintendo is ever going to put the original final fantasy on the VC? i have it for the original console, but it's a pain hooking it up.

Starting in May in Japan, the first six classic Final Fantasy titles will be released on Wii's Virtual Console service. In the U.S., said Iwata, the games that were actually released in the U.S. will come out here, too.

They are coming
But it would be for the best that you stick to playing it on the NES as Nintendo are a bit slow
