Gamecube game saves on WII

So if I play a GC game... for example.. Zelda Wind Waker for GC on my WII.. i use the GC controller... but my question is about saves. Do i HAVE to have GC memory card? or can I use SD card or WII's internal memory to save GC game saves?

Yea, that doesn't make much sense does it? They should have integrated the two. But I just went and bought an $8 gc memord card from amazon and thats working fine.
