hard drive problems games wont load

hi im new here and to be honest im pretty useless with technology however we brough our son a wii last christmas with a seperate hardrive containing his games he as played it a dozen times now we was thinking of selling it so have checked it all still works and allthough it will play disc games fine it wont play from the hard drive it will display them on screen but once you click to load them a few seconds and screen goes blank but nothing else i know without lots and lots of info this is probably a long shot but does anybody have a clue what may be wrong with it
