Help! Disc won't insert!

I just sold my Wii to a friend. It was working fine when it left my house but was sitting idle for about a month before it was picked up. My friend set it up but hasn't been able to play - mainly because whenever he tries to insert a disc, it gets most of the way in and stops and then the console spits it back out again. Also, the console bay doesn't light up like it did for me. I think that's probably minor.

When he loads it up, the main menu works fine (no disc in the console but it tells him to insert a disc with the spinning disc icon).

Any ideas? I'm trying to troubleshoot from a distance....

That would be great...if the console would accept discs. That's the problem. The disc gets in almost all the way and then the console spits it out again. I haven't seen anything in the manual about that.
