HORI Fighting Stick WII problems

Hi Everyone. I'm new to this so please excuse any mistakes I make. I just recently purchased Smash Bros Brawl and a HORI Fighting Stick. I can't seem to make my characters move forward or backward with the stick like I should. Can someone offer me a solution?

I think its due to it not havein a analog stick and Smash havein all movement based on that

The hori stick is more or less for VC games
