I'm considering buying the LAN adapter. Anybody know if that will help with the host-lag problem?

In theory, it should help, but most of it depends on the quality of your connection.

A hard connection is gonna be better than a wireless connection, right?

I got a LAN adapter.
It got rid of me getting kicked from the internet whenever my WiFi renewed itself.
I still got hostlag though.
Methinks it has also to do with where you live.
In my head Americans have less hostlag than Europeans(=me).

Surprisingly, when I host sessions it runs super smoothly, yet I live in a rural area. Still, like koopa said, it may be todo with where you live.

I am having problems with it saying that the host has quit, what is the cause of that problem?

The first person into a lobby hosts the game for all other users. Whenever they quit the match, it ends the game, everyone loses whatever experience points they had earned, and you get the 'Host has quit' message.
