How to do power ups in the game?

In the 101 you just press C and you do the power up, but in the game, they are done in some ocassions. What is the trick? Thanks

If you tackle someone you give them an item, or shoot at your opponents goal for one.

you can only do power ups when you have items, you gotta check the top of the screen where your characters face is to see what ur items are
