    Yes, the online is region-locked.
You can still send messages to your friend's Wii, even if they are on another continent, but you can't play games online with them.

    It's gay.

REALLY! I thought it was just strikers. Can we really not play SSBB when it comes out??

Wow, I had no idea how much the Nintendo online sucks compared to Xbox Live.

If I remember correctly, random matches are only within your own region. But if you play against friends, they can be anywhere.

All online games are (and will be) region locked, unless otherwise stated by Nintendo.
Not going to happen, though, being the tards they are...

It's by far the worst decision Nintendo has made, I have to say...

But no one bloody plays in Europe. It was possible with the DS, I don't see why it can't be for the Wii.

Lag really becomes a big issue with long distance connections.

Does the regional thing stink? Yes. Are you guys taken it a bit far on Nintendo? Yes. You are comparing them to Microsoft and Xbox live. Lets see how fair this comparison is.

    Nintendo Wii- First generation online
Xbox 360 - Second generation online (yes i know xbox was not regional read the rest)

Nintendo- For the most part 100% Console and portable gaming system.

Microsoft- More servers/computers than games at all (Also about a much larger corperation).

Lets see Microsoft has 1. makes networks and servers (other than routers). 2. Microsoft already has huge networks in place for games and has been doing all this for 10 years at least.

You need to give Nintendo some time to get things in order. The reason you can not play internationally isn't that they are making a stupid decision and doign it because they don't want you to play the people. It is simply they don't have the ability to do it and make it as low lag and high quality as it currently is. Could they probably rig it to work? Most likely, but then the same people would be complaining about the bad lag and quality of it.

Not to mention lets see all that Xbox live servers wonder how they pay for it. O yeah that fee you have to pay every month. Thats funny seems like Nintendo didn't have the equipment for this, had to get that. Didn't have expertise in it so had to hire people for that. Sells there system allot cheaper. Designed a totally new way of control. O yeah and it's online is still free.

Also forgot in my last reply do note all of these things are on the server side. So at any time Nintendo can change there servers and this would change even for older games. So they could do this in 6 months after they have the right servers in place and it could effect even games that were out like MSC.

Yep, it is region locked. There was a lag issue with the DS in Mario Kart DS, and Metroid Prime Hunters.

Actually it is there second venture into online on a home console.

The Gamecube was supposed to have 90% of it's games online when it was first released. Obviously this failed, and there is only a handful of games that can actually be played online (such as Phantasy Star Online)

You are partially correct but not. Yes Game cube did do online however Nintendo did not do any of the equipment or stuff itself. The game companies them self were suppose to handle it on there own servers etc. The only thing Nintendo did was give the game cube a port to do it on. This time Nintendo is putting there own games online.

Mario Kart Double Dash has an online function.

Well kind of, it had a LAN function. If you set up a VLAN (virtual local area network) you could play friends over the internet

    1. this is getting way off topic even if this did all require Nintendo to have servers etc. it's nothing compared to Microsoft's equipment etc.

    2. Yes Vlan which means there is no server involved. This means it simply makes a lan connection (Vlan just makes your lan extend to another network via the internet) over the internet. There are still no servers. Still nothing that would help with this.
