A friend code is a 16 digit number unique to every single Wii. If you add someone else's friend code and they add yours, you can exchange messages, send purchasable gifts (the Wii has it's own online store; anything purchasable can be bought and sent to a friend's Wii as a gift), and a few other various things.

Every Wii game that has online features will also have it's own unique Friend Code, which is 12 digits instead of 16. These friend codes are usually considered a bit more important than the Wii's 16 digit one, since exchanging these game-specific codes with friends will allow you to play with them online and other such things.
