Welcome to the forum. Yes, the updates are purported to brick modded Wii's.

My Wii has frozen a couple of times while playing Madden '07...probably because the frame rate is a tad much for the console if pushed. I think maybe the trick is to let everything finish loading instead of pushing the buttons to make each screen load instead of waiting the second or two it takes. It's pretty disappointing when playing a tight game and it freezes. This is known to happen with consoles periodically and is no concern for worry though, unless it happens too much...remember we get a one year factory warranty from Nintendo, plus if you register your console on Nintendo.com you get an extra three months for free.

The Wii is actually a pretty flawless and smooth running console, and you really should have no problems with it. Happy gaming!
