can you put gamecube saves on the SD Card and copy the gamecube saves to your gamecube memory card?

Would that also mean that you must have a GC mem card for GC games or could the console store some of the data? (Asking because I have yet to get a GC game and try myself, wondering if I have to get more than just the GC controller).

No, you need a GC card for GC game saves. The SD card or internal memory can only be used for Wii saves or Virtual Console saves.

If you don't have a GC memory card, you can't save any data from GC games.
