Rhythm Heaven on the Wii is one of the quirkier games that Nintendo of America showed off at E3 this year. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, especially those fans and Operation Rainfall campaigners in the US who are angry that NOA is choosing to release this game and not Pandora’s Tower, The Last Story, and Xenoblade Chronicles, but based on the game’s newly opened Japanese website which is chock full of madcap videos, it could still be a lot of Parappa-the-Rapper-style cartoony fun if we give it a chance. The music alone in this video, courtesy of famous Japanese pop music producer Tsunku, is pretty awesome!

Rhythm Heaven is a game that aims to both teach and test rhythm with fun and quirky music challenges, with players getting to feel the rhythm and complete musical patterns on the fly via various visual and audio cues. Players have to tap either the A button or both A and B buttons together on their Wii Remote in time to the music to pass each challenge, with the fun coming from feeling the rhythm and hitting the beats accurately. Some of the zany challenges that players can expect to face include having to stab a rolling pea with a fork, becoming a demon-slashing samurai, and playing aerial badminton, all in time to the music. The more proficient you get at playing the game, the more medals you can earn to unlock bonus content. Although Rhythm Heaven has previously been available on the DS, all the games in the Wii version are completely new, although you might recognise some familiar characters reappearing.

Rhythm Heaven has no release date outside of Japan as yet, but hopefully it will be appearing before the end of the year.
