Sega: Sonic is the only playable character in Project Needlemouse

According wii.qj.net, SEGA is working on the next installment of the Sonic the hedgehog games, titled for now Project: Needlemouse.

Perhaps you've been wary about Project Needlemouse, Sega new 2D Sonic game. If so, this might give you some peace of mind. According to Sega, the game will focus "solely on one blue hedgehog" and no one else.

After a week of counting down and crossing out names from a list of possible playabvle characters, Sega had this to say about Project Needlemous on their official US blog:

To the thousands of you out there asking for a game where Sonic is the only playable character – rejoice. As of today, your wish has been granted. In Project Needlemouse, there will be no new characters – playable or otherwise. The focus will remain solely on one blue hedgehog.

Sega's RubyEclispe, who also posted the announcement, further added the following in the comments section:

Project Needlemouse is being created for the people who have long asked us for a game with only Sonic that harkens back to his 2D roots. We can’t please everyone, but we feel very strongly that there is a massive group of people out there who have been waiting for a moment like this to finally come.

Sadly, Sega still hasn't said anything about target platforms or release windows, but they did release a piece of concept art for the game featuring one of Dr. Robotnik's crabmeat badniks:

After playin Unleashed and the Black Night, Im a little scared of a new sonic game, but as long as its simple running boards and no weapons are transformations, Ill check it out.

i thought Unleashed was okay but...the Black Knight one was...too weird i thought though i never played that black Knight one, but it'll be nice it see Sonic traveling back to his kickass root of his 2D fashion on the speedometer again. and the Sonic RUSH i thought was a Epic FAIL...I mean..really.

I will still get it, but I really want more playable characters. The more SEGA listens to the fans, the worse things get. Get all the characters together and create a good game that you take a long time to perfect. Don't just revert to the old ways of 2D Sonic and ONLY Sonic.

oh hell no, only sonic is a good thing. it means that the concentration on speed won't waver. we need a sonic game with excellent level design, sonic, and speed. thanks to only using sonic, two of the three are already done.

No. Look at the old games. Sonic didn't actually go any faster than Mario in Super Mario World when sprinting. But by adding loops and realistic acceleration it made it seem like Sonic was going faster.

Also, why bother focusing on Sonic when you have characters like Knuckles, Shadow, and Espio?

That pic of the badnick was promising-looking, since it reminds me of the baddies from Sonic 1/2/3/S&K. I hope this succeeds, I might actually hope for this.
Also hope it releases for 360, otherwise I might consider it a load of bollocks.

You have terrible taste. Shadow and Knuckles are badass and Espio IS A FARKING NINJA CHAMELEON FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. I hope Sega never listens to anything you say about how to make the games better.

I thought the sonic remake for the 360 and ps3 which featured the new white hedgehog was okay. What we REALLY need is a straight up SONIC ADVENTURE 3
