Super Mario 3 virtual download -- blank screen

I just downloaded Super Mario 3 from the virtual console for my son. When I try to load it the screen goes blank and the wii freezes. The console is not modded and I have the most recent software update. I have not had any problems with the Wii previously and other games still work.

This is the first time I have tried a downloaded game. Please help if you can.

most likely you are using component cables?

Yes, I am using component cables. I realized that I had to set my output settings to 480p rather than 480i. That now seems to have fixed the problem.
