Super Mario Bros 2 not recognising '1'

So I downloaded Super Mario Bros 2 for the virtual console but i cannot pick up turnips or enemies as '1' the button traditionally meant to substitute the appropriate NES button for lifting things does not work. I've tried a classic controller this also does not work.

Please help.

Press the Home button and go into the "Operations Guide" to view the button controls. If you still have a problem, erase the game from within the Channels and redownload it.
