I just got my Wii a couple of days ago, and I read online that Nintendo was giving the Internet Browser for free until July 1 or something. Since I missed it, it now costs 500 WiiPoints to get it. Is there any way around this? I don't think it's fair to be getting charged for an item that was originally free and is still free.

It does kind of stink if you missed the Beta trial (we did as well), but Opera is not always a free product. Opera "for devices" like WMobile platforms is also a pay product.

That being said, I think marketing the WII as "internet ready" and leveraging more web based tech for the system is a smart thing. What ~N~ should do it include a 500 point voucher with every system, so you could opt to get online for free if you wanted (or alternately apply it towards a VC game, etc.) - just offering a free option would be nice.

I will likely wind up buying it since it is reasonably cheap at $5 - though I'm not 100% sure why I'd need to surf on the WII since we have so many other connected devices around here!

thanks for your reply....I would agree that N should have put 500 free points to give the user the ability to download it or put it towards something else in the future. It's just unfortunate that I had missed out on the free offer. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any other freebies in the future rest assured.
