Transcend 500GB StoreJet 25M3 500GB wii compatibility?

I`d like to know whether the Transcend 500GB StoreJet 25M3 has any known issues with wii.
It`s a friend`s console, so I don`t have all the information as yet such as which IOS is installed. A fresh IOS was installed a couple of days ago in a shop with the purpose of playing games from a usb drive.
The friend has the above mentioned brand. Should I recommend trying to exchange it for another?
BTW, how can I tell which IOS version is installed on the wii console?

The Wii does not support external drives. SD cards are the only way to expand the storage space. So, the StoreJet is not compatible.

Maybe I did not phrase myself well enough. I am given to understand one can load games to an external USB harddisk and play them from that drive instead of via a cd.
