What are reputation points?

On this site, what are reputation points and what are they for, what do they do?:crazy:

If you found what a persons post was about you can click on the green mushroom and they get a rep. The more reps they get the more green blocks appear under their username. (insert rep )

E.g., if you create a thread on a topic/question you wish to solve, and a guys does that. You can reward that person by pressing the mushroom

You start with 1 box and for every 25 points you get you gain a box. The more reputation the reputation giver has, the more reputation points you will get from them.
