Whats a wii system update? (exact)

So far its bin, a channel adder, but i want to know turly what a wii system update is? is it a "code" update? or a patch of some sort? call me nerdy, but as a nintendo fan i want to know the tehc specs. So my question to you-what dose/will the system update do?

normally it adds a channel and then checks to see if the parental control thing is up to date(like if it has all the ratings for the current games that are out so it knows what your playing) the main thing is that it updates the firmware if needed

Is the rating not stored on the game itself?
