wi fi usb connector

when i try to get it to work,it opens the found new hardware thing, and it says: the system file cannot be specified. but it is connected. and in the installation wizard from the cd, it says, insert the USB connector int your computers usb port, but its already connected, so i click ok, and it says application error. what am i doing wrong?

Try leaving the USB connector out of your computer until the installation asks for it.

i do that, but after i connect it, an error box comes up, and says to connect it, but it is

Do you have another computer you can try this on? Could be a bad adapter.
