Wii VS Wii Mini

Hi All,
I need some advice on what to go for - Wii (Black Console with New Super Mario Brother) OR Wii Mini.
Here is the back ground:
My son is 7 year old. He has been asking Sky Lander swap force and Wii for a while. None of the family members owned a game console before (So no experiences in any consoles)
I wanted to start my son with a basic something. Wii and Wii mini are are selling for reasonable price and my son wants a Wii any way.
I bought this - Sky Lander Starter Pack for Wii with his favorite characters.

What I want is a Console to play the above (important) and some more games. Any thing extra is a bonus!. I have come up with the following 2. If both are priced same, which one would you get if you have my needs?

Get the normal Wii, as the minis are a waste of time.
Or get a WiiU as the wii is no longer supported and the WiiU plays wii games

Wii / U for sure. The Mini shouldn't even be considered a console.
