My experience was similar to Inspire's. I called to ask if the place I pre-ordered from was going to do a midnight release and he said that he wasn't sure since their whole first shipment was going to pre-order customers. He said that they had sold out of pre-orders withing the first two hours the store was open. Luckily I got there before everyone else and was first on the list so I should get one even if the store only gets one unit.

When I pre-ordered my system, there were many people pre-ordering more than one controller (like...three extras sometimes). That may answer your question as to why they could no longer let you pre-order one (though it would have been easier for them to say so).
