youll basically get one big update (i did)
then every so often in a blue moon another update will come
most updates for certin games that you download when you boot up the game
system updates are rare
and as far as vitalness for out of the box online play, its not that important, i say a good day or 2 is good to get use to everything and play games by yourself for the last time...ever
(i always chat with friends while i play single player games so im not alone =])
