The latest issue of US games mag GamePro has got Xbox 360 fans excited thanks to its double mention of the as-of-yet unannounced Gears of War 2 on its cover.

No more details are known as of yet, though the news had reignited previous talk that Epic’s much-wanted sequel could see its first public unveiling at the Game Developers Conference at San Francisco later this month.

These rumours have been backed up by the claims that Epic has booked a rather large stand right next to Microsoft’s.

Upon its release in November 2006, Gears of War became an instant critical and commercial success, selling over three million copies in less than three months on sale.

Interestingly, the game was never released in Germany after it was denied a rating.

If it's true, it's probably the least surprising surprise in a long time. According to the cover shot of the upcoming issue of GamePro magazine on the mag's official Web site, there'll be hot Gears of War 2 info inside.

Epic Games' vice president Mark Rein has already been fuelling rumours that a sequel to the game was in the works. As far back as November 2006, he told readers on the game's official forums that Gears of War was meant to be a trilogy, possibly even more. To quote the man himself: "If we can keep making quality games that fans obviously love...then why would we have to stop at three? I don't see the Metal Gear Solid, Mario, Grand Theft Auto, or Final Fantasy series (among others) stopping at three."

At the beginning of the year, a Gears prequel was announced, although to the disappointment of many gamers, it will be in book form as opposed to a new game. Gears of War: The Pendulum Wars--The Battle of the Aspho Fields is set during the Locust-Human War, and will fill in some of the backstory and flesh out the characters of the game.
