I looked on nintendo's website, but did not see details pertaining to this, forgive me if its a dumb (or obvious) question:

do you have to pay a subscription fee to connect to the wii websites? or just plug in an (active) internet line and you're good to go?

Connect 24/7 is for free... U just start your wii, set up the wireless connection and u can download games for the VC and soon use the weather forecast, news and stuff.

U only pay your provider-stuff!

Yup you're right, free to connect to Nintendos services just have to pay for an internet connection.

Edit: The above was a bit misleading, you can connect to the VC downloader for free but you have to pay Nintendo to download the games.
