Wii locks up in the channel screen

I sent a few picture emails to my Wii and the blue slot light went on. When I turned on the console to see the messages, it locks up one second after displaying the channel screen. I guess that's when it updates the new message count at the lower right corner. Now this happens every time I power on the Wii - it's practically DEAD now! Great! After using it for one day!

Is there any way to reset the Wii to the factory defaults? My idea was to remove the screw on the little battery compartment on the bottom of the Wii, take out the battery and wait for a while until the flash memory is erased. Anyone tried this? Does this work? How long does the battery have to be out?

Whoops, I just read in the manual that the button cell battery is only for time and date. Now, how to reset the Wii without sending it to Nintendo?

Mailed the Wii to Nintendo today as there is no other way to fix it
