Quick question.........You must have someone else's friend code to play with them online? Is there an "open" area of link up with players online such as PS3 and Xbox does?

depends on the game, in many cases, yes you need friend codes.

You need the friend code to play against a particular person, but most games still allow online play against random people without knowing any friend codes.
