Animal Crossing : Wild World problems!

Hey everyone.

I need help with Animal Crossing for the DS. I just started the game and finished all of those tasks at the beginning. Now I want to make money. I bought a fishing rod and a shovel, like an online guide told me to do. But whenever I get it from my inventory to use it, the only two options I have are "drop this" or "nevermind." I can never actually just carry it or something, therefore I can never use the item. Does anybody else have this problem? Please help.

When u have the inventory open touch the item u want to use and drag it to the picture of u and let go of it. Now when ur outside u will be holding the item.
